A brake failure led to a single-car crash that damaged the flag pole in front of the Dalton Fire Department’s Station 1 on Wednesday afternoon, but fortunately nobody was hurt.
The crash happened shortly before 1 p.m. Maria Gonzalez, 44, told Dalton police that she was traveling north on Valley Drive approaching the four-way stop sign at School Street when her brakes failed. She rolled through the intersection and down the hill approaching Waugh Street where other cars were waiting at a red light.
Not wanting to hit the other cars, Gonzalez told police she veered to the right into the parking lot of Station 1, hitting the flag pole. The collision knocked the flag pole out of the ground and caused the air bags in the minivan to deploy. Neither Gonzalez nor either of her two children in the vehicle were injured.
No charges were filed.
