Lowery is DPD ‘Officer of the Year’

Matthew Lowery deflected praise for the part he played in resolving a kidnapping last November.

“There were five other officers with me,” Lowery said after receiving the Dalton Police Department’s Officer of the Year award for 2008-2009. But it was his fellow officers who nominated Police Officer 1st Class Lowery for the award, and the department’s command staff made the selection based on his defusing of the situation.

“It was a young girl who was taken by someone the family knew,” said Parker of the call the department got from Bartow County authorities. “Officer Lowery spotted the vehicle and called officers for help. He stopped the car, discovered the young girl and made an arrest. He then stayed with the girl until her family came from Cartersville. His response to the kidnapping ensured she was safe.

“If your fellow officers vote for you, that’s as good a recommendation as you can find.”

“I’m certainly flattered that my fellow officers chose me,” said Lowery, who has been on the Dalton police force for eight years.
