Dalton police are still searching for the thieves who broke into several offices on Thornton Avenue earlier this week, including one belonging to U.S. Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ranger.
“They are trying to make sure all items are identified, and the current list includes laptop computers, an iPad, camera and projectors,” said Lt. Chris Cooke with the Dalton Police Department.
According to incident reports, the break-ins occurred between when people left from work Wednesday and before Thursday morning as they returned. Authorities believe whoever ransacked the offices of Graves, AFLAC, The Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia and Cycle Tex on the 700 block of Thornton Avenue used some kind of object to pry open the back doors to get inside. Someone also broke into Bancorp, officials said, but nothing was initially reported stolen.
The items taken from Graves’ office were two laptop computers. Reports state someone kicked in the door to the office to get inside. Cooke said there’s no evidence the thieves were solely targeting the congressman.
“U.S. Capitol Police, along with local authorities, are investigating the incident,” Graves spokeswoman Jennifer Hazelton said in a statement.
Community Foundation Director David Aft said the police were prompt and professional, and he’s just glad no one was hurt.
“We count ourselves among the lucky,” Aft said. “I’m just so grateful nobody was at the office and had to confront a burglar.”
Aft said the thieves didn’t take the foundation’s computers — which have data that he noted was already backed up elsewhere — but they seemed to be after smaller items, including an iPad, a digital camera and a projector.
Reports show items stolen from the other offices included several thousand dollars worth of designer clothes and electronics and a few hundred dollars worth of cash.
