State fire investigators haven’t officially determined what started a fire that killed a 2-year-old at a trailer in Spring Place on Wednesday, but they do know a pot of grease was left warming on the stove.
A call came in about 2:50 p.m. for the fire that occurred at 1178 Highway 225, killing Jose Arriasola.
“The investigation reveals that Arriasola was left alone in the 400-square-foot mobile home while his mother, Marialla Gurrero, 23, ran an errand,” state Insurance and Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said in a press release. “Investigators did not rule out unattended cooking as the cause.”
Officials said Gurrero told investigators “that she had left a pot of grease warming on the stove before leaving the home to run an errand next door. When she returned, the home was on fire.”
Murray County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ray Sitton said Thursday that it’s unknown if anyone will face charges. He said officials are still waiting for the state fire marshal’s office investigation to wrap up, which could be as early as next week. They’re also awaiting an autopsy report.
Sheriff Howard Ensley said Gurrero wasn’t physically injured in the fire, but she was very distraught and had to be hospitalized.
A neighbor who declined to give her name said she heard screams and ran outside her home to try to help the family when the trailer was on fire.
“(The mother) said that she left the baby at home by itself and went to a neighbor’s to borrow some paper towels and when she came back, it was on fire,” the woman said.
The Murray County Fire Department is assisting in the investigation.
