Motorcyclist in critical condition

A motorcyclist injured in a Saturday afternoon crash near Big D Flea Market remains in critical condition at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, officials said.

Benjamin Daniel, 18, of Dalton, was “seriously injured” when he drove head-on into a Toyota 4-Runner on Maple Grove Road, Georgia State Patrol Trooper Kenny Moss said. Moss said the collision occurred as Daniel was coming out of a curve on the road. There is no indication alcohol was involved or that Daniel was speeding, he said.

“The only thing I can prove for sure is that he entered the oncoming lane, and I don’t know why,” Moss said. The wreck occurred at about 2:30 p.m.

Officials said Daniel’s Honda collided with the Toyota driven by Jamila Amjad, 34, of Dalton, who had three children in the vehicle with her. They were taken to Hamilton Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Moss said Daniel was still in the intensive care unit at Erlanger as of Thursday morning. The investigation is ongoing.
