School officials said not to “overreact” to two recent weapon-related situations at Murray County Schools.
“These are two isolated incidents,” Mike Tuck, Murray County Schools administrative services director, said in a press release Wednesday. “Those involved in responding (to them) should be commended for reacting in such as a calm, measured and professional manner to an extremely difficult situation.”
On Tuesday morning, Murray County High School went on lockdown when a 14-year-old male student threatened a 17-year-old female student with serrated steak knives. On Sept. 12, Bagley Middle School was on lockdown when a 16-year-old Mountain Creek Academy student took a shotgun on a bus.
There were no injuries reported during either incident.
“Many other school systems, including some locally, have faced similar situations,” Tuck said. “All of our schools are safe, the overwhelming majority of our students are very well behaved, and our staff is professional and well trained in handling crisis situations.”
School officials said the community has to “decide the level of freedom, privacy and convenience (the community is) willing to give up in the name of safety.”
“Short of marching all of our students through metal detectors and searching them at the school house doors, all we, and other school systems, can do when faced with situations such as the one that occurred Tuesday morning, is have a crisis plan in place and react according to the plan,” Tuck said.
During this week’s incident, the 14-year-old student was detained by a teacher and another student while the school resource officer responded, said Chief Deputy Ray Sitton. He said no further information was available at this time.
