A North Murray High School student has been suspended indefinitely and faces possible disciplinary action after making an “extremely insensitive and inappropriate comment” about the Connecticut school shootings, a Murray school system official said.
The shootings took place Friday morning when a man entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and shot and killed 26 people, including 20 children.
Mike Tuck, Murray County Schools director of administrative services, said in an email he was “unable to disclose the substance of the comment.” He said the comment sparked rumors by some students that the suspended student was planning to hurt someone.
“Despite rumors to the contrary, the comment did not specify any person, mode or time frame,” Tuck said. “It was not a specific threat, but a general observation, and not deemed to pose any immediate risk of harm to anyone.”
Tuck said school officials will have a disciplinary hearing with the student after winter break.
“The comment was taken very seriously and appropriately handled by school administration,” he added.
