The Dalton-Whitfield Senior Center will be getting a major overhaul soon.
Dalton Parks and Recreation Director Steve Card says the city will be putting out a request for proposals (RFPs) in the next two or three weeks on a major overhaul of the building’s interior.
“We are going to be doing a lot of cosmetic work, flooring, painting walls, doing some bathroom renovations, cabinetry. New kitchen equipment is definitely on the top of the list, and depending on how the RFPs come back, as much as we can,” Card said. “Until the RFPs come back and we know what we have to cut and what we can leave in I can’t get too specific.”
The senior center is jointly funded by Dalton and Whitfield County, but it is managed by the city recreation department. Card said all of the funding will come from a federal community development block grant.
“Our city attorney has asked us not to tell the contractors how much money it is. We want to give them a laundry list of things to do and get the best price we can. We deliberately did not tell them how much money we have so we can hopefully get the most bang for the buck,” Card said.
He said the work will require the senior center to be closed, probably at least for a few weeks. But he said until the RFPs are in and he is able to talk to the contractor selected for the work he won’t know exactly how long it will have to be closed.
Senior Center Director Rosie Mosteller says staff are making plans to move as many of the center’s programs as they can to the Mack Gaston Community Center on Fredrick Street while the work is done.
“We hope that we can take most of them over there. We’ll have to shut down a few things. Of course, we won’t be having meals. That will be on hold,” she said.
Mosteller said that when the senior center reopens it will still provide all of the programs it has been offering.
