Varnell voters approve Sunday retail alcohol sales

Varnell voters on Tuesday approved the retail sale of malt beverages and wine on Sundays.

The final vote was 132 (54.32 percent) in favor and 111 (45.68 percent) against.

“The City Council put this on the ballot because many people asked them for it, and we wanted to let the voters decide,” Varnell Mayor Dan Peeples said. “The City Council didn’t determine this. We let the voters decide.”

Varnell currently permits the retail sale of malt beverages and wine Monday to Saturday, and it permits the sale of malt beverages, wine and distilled spirits by the drink in restaurants seven days a week.

The state of Georgia banned Sunday retail sales of all alcohol until last year, when the General Assembly voted to allow local governments to put referendums on the ballot on whether to legalize Sunday sales. Cohutta, Dalton and Eton voters approved Sunday retail sales last November.

Peeples said Tuesday night he did not yet know exactly when Varnell stores will be able to start selling malt beverages and wine on Sunday.
