The oil paintings of Pauline Melton and David Aft’s “Spring Collection” will be on display at Michael’s Fine Arts and Framing in Dalton beginning today. The exhibition starts with a opening reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and runs through the month. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend.
Melton is a native of Tate and grew up in the Northwest Georgia area. Melton cites the people and families of this area and its natural beauty as inspirations. According to Melton, she paints things that bring her joy and inspire her, whether the subject matter is a quiet beach scene with kids wading in the ocean, or a slightly more dramatic encounter with an elephant, her paintings capture a simple humanity.
“I think we are all drawn to art that makes us smile or touches something within us,” Melton said. “Good paintings reach beyond their use as simple decorative art and begin a story that your imagination finishes. That is where the fun is.”
Aft grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta and moved to Dalton in 1996. He is known for his impressionistic style and loose brush strokes. Aft’s paintings often are driven as much by color and motion as they are by subject matter. One of his favorite subjects is dance and the motion and movement its imagery evokes.
“Each collection I start includes a few dancers, but also reflects my state of mind at the time.” Aft said. “When Michael Thacker asked Pauline and me to do this show I wanted to present a variety of works that explore everything from the whimsical to the serious and I think we have achieved that goal.”
Thacker, the gallery owner, shared his enthusiasm, adding, “This is the second time David has shown his work at our gallery, the first being two years ago. This will be Pauline’s first show with us. Together, there will be around 35 individual works of art on display and I think people will find the show enjoyable to look at and, at a certain level a little provocative, as their work covers such a wide variety of subject matter.”
Paintings by Melton and Aft have been shown in local festivals, art galleries and are held by many private collectors.
They noted that their “Spring Collection” is composed of a number of small and medium-sized works that should entertain visitors and art patrons alike.
