Free DSC concert Sunday features violone

Chattanooga Symphony string musician Eric Hanson will perform on the five string violone, ancestor of the modern double bass, in a free concert Sunday afternoon at Dalton State College.

Audience members will hear several selections they’ve probably never heard before as many pieces composed for the violone are nearly impossible to play on modern instruments, said Ellie Jenkins, assistant professor of music for Dalton State.

“Hanson became interested in the five-string violone while searching through lists of chamber music,” she said. “He noticed that many pieces called for a bass violone and that many of those pieces are rarely performed. His investigation led to research about the instrument and its repertoire, and that research has been expanded into a doctoral project.”

Hanson has been a member of the Chattanooga Symphony since 1994 and has served as Principal Bassist with the Huntsville Symphony and as an active musician in Milwaukee, Wisc., where he frequently performed with the Milwaukee Symphony. He teaches music in Chattanooga, Rome and Dalton and is working on doctoral studies at the Shenandoah Conservatory.

He will be accompanied Sunday by Kris Carlisle, associate professor of piano at Berry College. Carlisle received training at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Claremont Graduate University. He has won several competitions including the Los Angeles Liszt Competition and the Rome (Italy) Festival Competition and has received many additional awards including the Martha Fischer-Tye Foundation Award, Special Achievement in Musicology Award from the Kennedy Center and the Georgia Music Teachers Steinway Piano Galleries Educator Grant.  

The free concert is sponsored by Dalton State’s Office of Student Life and Department of Humanities. The Guest Recital will begin at 3 p.m. in Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall; seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
