Strong winds that downed at least one power line around 5 a.m. Monday delayed Murray County Schools start times by a couple of hours and left 440 customers in and around Chatsworth without power, officials said.
Georgia Power spokesman Brian Green said there was a wire down due to a tree on Murray Drive near Chestnut. He said crews had electricity restored by about 8:30 a.m.
Murray County Schools Administrative Services Director Mike Tuck said that while power had returned by about 7 a.m. to many areas, including his own house in Chatsworth, officials had to act sooner than that. An automated text alert went out to parents and others signed up to receive the service at about 5:40 a.m. saying schools would be delayed until 9 a.m.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this unexpected and unavoidable delay may have caused our students, parents and staff,” Tuck said in a written statement.
According to the National Weather Service, winds between 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph can be expected for most of North Georgia through Tuesday evening.
