Special Olympics Fall State Games open today

— The Special Olympics Fall State Games open today in Dalton with a special guest.

Lauren Alaina, a country music star and former “American Idol” runner-up, is the grand marshal for the Opening Ceremony at the trade center, where she will also perform. The Opening Ceremony is free and open to the public. It kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m.

About 2,000 athletes will be in Dalton through Sunday competing in a variety of events including bocce, cycling, golf, golf skills, long distance running and walking, softball and softball skills.

On Saturday, Bert Weiss from “The Bert Show” on Q100 will volunteer with his son at the bocce competition at Heritage Point Park.
