Through her 50 years at First Baptist Church of Dalton, Martha Hughes has come in contact with thousands of people and has helped many of them.
As the pastoral ministries associate/receptionist at the church, she often works behind the scenes. And that’s fine with her, according to her husband, Dewey, a longtime teacher at Dalton High School.
“She says, ‘I don’t do my job to get praise or recognition, I do it solely because it’s God’s business,” he said.
But recognition is just what she will receive this weekend. A reception to honor Martha Hughes is Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m at First Baptist Church of Dalton. The public is invited.
The couple moved to Dalton in 1961. A year later she began working at the church as the education secretary. After the pastor’s secretary retired, she moved into that position in 1978. Since recent pastors use day planners and keep their own schedule, her position evolved into the pastoral ministries associate/receptionist.
She helps oversee ministries out of church, and takes calls and performs other tasks at the church, such as preparing cards for the men’s prayer breakfast.
“She takes care of a lot of problems because she knows basically all of the people at church,” Dewey Hughes said. “They feel good about calling her and asking her questions, finding out what’s going on.”
