Two new multipurpose fields at Dalton’s James Brown Park should be ready for football and soccer by April 1.
“That’s the date we are shooting for, weather permitting,” said Steve Card, Dalton Parks and Recreation Department Director.
The fields themselves are finished, and Card describes the overall project as “95 percent complete.”
“We are just wrapping things up. We have to do the cosmetic things, such as the landscaping and some sod that needs to be put down around the edges,” Card said. “We have some finish work on the fencing.”
In addition to the fields, the new complex also features a pavilion with a concession stand and restrooms, new parking, new lights and a retention pond to manage stormwater runoff. In addition to the two fields at James Brown Park, the city also plans a multipurpose field at the Dalton Community Center, which will open this spring along with the splash pad and other outdoor amenities. The department also placed new turf on two fields at the Broaddus-Durken soccer complex off the Cleveland Highway.
“The five fields plus all the amenities cost us right at $2 million,” Card said.
When the field at the community center is complete, the city will have nine fields.
Soccer and football lines were sewn into the fields, so they don’t have to be painted.
“We can play soccer and football length-wise, and we can also play two soccer games width-wise,” he said.
But Card said the fields will not only be used for football and soccer, but for tee ball and lacrosse as well. He also said the fields can also be used to teach children to play golf using “limited flight” balls.
“These fields will serve the needs of the community, but we also hope they have an economic impact,” Card said. “It will give us the ability to draw in soccer and football tournaments where we will have numerous teams right here at one facility. And if we have a really large turnout, we’ve got three more fields within about a mile or so.”
Many of those fields will be used in July during The Daily Citizen’s Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship. During the event, 32 teams from 11 states will compete in the football tournament.
