Atlanta area officials say a Dalton man who was discovered with a torn sheet wrapped around his neck in a Fulton County jail last week committed suicide.
Mickey Kettinger, 24, was pronounced dead at Grady Medical Center on Sept. 12 within hours of being arrested and taken to the Fulton County jail on drug charges. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office determined the cause of death to be suicide, an investigator said Tuesday.
Ricky Gann said he was friends with Kettinger and is concerned about what really happened. He said he wasn’t initially able to get information from jail officials or police or even confirm that Kettinger had been in the jail.
Efforts to reach Kettinger’s family were unsuccessful, but Gann said he isn’t the only one who is concerned about what happened.
“We know the kid wasn’t depressed. He wasn’t that kind of person to take his life,” Gann said. “Mickey wasn’t that kind of a person.”
Fulton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan said Atlanta police were called to investigate when Kettinger was found unresponsive in his cell on Sept. 12, as is standard procedure. He was in jail on charges of possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.
