“Words cannot express how happy I am,” exclaimed Quinn Martin, a 14-year-old home schooler who was named winner of the City of Refuge van design contest on Thursday.
Her winning design will wrap around the 15-passenger vehicle that was awarded to the City of Refuge by Alliant Health Plans in June. The contest was open to the public.
“The van will assist in transporting marginalized citizens to the City of Refuge’s facility for free clinical services, food, temporary shelter and other assistance,” Alliant Health Plans officials said in a press release.
Martin said she heard about the contest from a friend and set to work right away, focusing on themes of family, hope and a bright future. The second eldest in her family, Martin cited her parents and siblings as her main inspiration.
“They were what I was thinking about when I set out to create my concept,” Martin said. “The whole design is about the love I feel from them.”
Pamela Cudd, director of City of Refuge, said she was overwhelmed by both the gift of the van and its design, which was selected as the best out of 19 submissions by voters on the contest’s website.
“Quinn’s design depicts exactly what we do at City of Refuge,” said Cudd. “The raised, helping hands show what the ministry is all about, reaching out to the families we serve. The rainbow on the design also brings a glimmer of hope to people who feel like they don’t have anything to believe in. Martin’s use of bright colors certainty reinforces the message.”
Cudd said she is confident that the design will help spread City of Refuge’s message to the area, as well as raise awareness of the organization’s presence in the community. H2B Creative, a Dalton-based advertising agency, will coordinate with a local business to put the design on the van.
“I just want to say thank you to everyone involved,” Cudd said. “Thank you to Quinn Martin, to Alliant Health Plans and to H2B for their involvement. We are incredibly grateful to be the beneficiaries of the contest. Without these contributions we could not meet the needs of the families who cannot drive themselves. It keeps us out of a terrible bind.”
Martin received a $500 award. $100 awards were given to Cecilia Pressnell (second place) and Sara Beth Massey (third place).
