A winter storm warning that began at 10 this morning will be in effect until 7 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
The winter storm advisory shows there could be snow accumulations from 1 to 3 inches across North Georgia with up to 4 inches possible in the mountains.
The rain is expected to begin changing over to snow by early afternoon today. Forecasters also predict winds from 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Temperatures are expected to drop to near 30 by midnight.
Already, snow was falling in central Mississippi early Thursday with 2 to 4 inches expected by midmorning, the weather service said. In north Georgia, the heaviest snow was expected to fall in the mountains, with lighter amounts possible in parts of the Atlanta area.
Dalton Public Schools, Whitfield County Schools and Murray County Schools are dismissing students early in anticipation of bad driving conditions.
The North Georgia Health District offices in Dalton and the Murray and Whitfield County health departments are closing today at 2 p.m. due to inclement weather, officials said. Updates will be posted at www.nghd.org.
All Georgia Northwestern Technical College campuses will close today at 2 p.m. All evening classes have been canceled. No decisions regarding Friday have been made, college officials said Thursday morning.
