For the first time in more than three months, the sound of the Mar-Sel Dancers’ taps filled the Dalton-Whitfield Senior Center on Tuesday.
“We are really glad to be back home. We were at the John Davis Recreation Center, and it was nice. But it wasn’t home,” said Margaret Culberson, the leader of the dancers.
The center was closed while it underwent a $150,000 makeover that included new kitchen equipment, flooring, lighting and cabinets, as well as bathroom renovations and new painting for the walls.
While the center was closed, its programs moved to the Davis center and to the Mack Gaston Community Center. The senior center reopened last week, but Tuesday was the official reopening and open house.
“They’ve really done a good job with it,” Culberson said.
Several of the regulars said the renovations make the building brighter and more welcoming.
“We are so excited about everything that has been done here,” said Executive Director Rosie Mosteller.
Dalton Parks and Recreation Director Steve Card said the senior center has been averaging more attendance each day over the past week than it did before it was closed.
“We are really excited about that and happy that people are coming in to take advantage of the programs we offer here,” he said.
The senior center is jointly funded by the city and county but operated by the city recreation department.
“The senior center plays a key role in our efforts to improve the quality of life here. We want people to have a center they can be proud of,” Card said.
Dalton Mayor David Pennington said the center serves “the people who built this community.”
