The Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel and Museum in Tunnel Hill had more than 6,500 visitors in 2012, up from 3,700 visitors in 2011. Of the those 2012 visitors, a little more than 4,500 paid for guided tours of the tunnel and museum.
Group tours from local churches, schools, civic groups as well as tour groups from other states visited the historic tunnel in 2012.
“The name change to Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel and addition of new highway signs along I-75 and billboards has had a large impact on the number of visitors coming to the tunnel,” said Ty Snyder, manager of visitor centers for the Dalton Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Snyder also said the addition of a new eight- passenger golf cart that allows visitors to ride through the 1,477-foot-long tunnel has improved the tour experience this year.
The Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information go to www.RailroadTunnel.com or call (706) 876-1571.
