Despite a tough economy and high unemployment, Whitfield and Murray County residents stepped up big time for the United Way of Northwest Georgia in 2012.
“We met our pledge goal of $3.35 million, which was $100,000 more than we raised in 2011,” said United Way campaign chairman Kevin Sanders.
The United Way held its 2013 annual meeting at Stage 123 in downtown Dalton on Monday.
Sanders said that in addition to giving their money last year, area residents donated plenty of their time to the United Way and the agencies it serves, donating almost 60,000 volunteer hours.
The United Way organized its corporate volunteer council in 2012 and it recruited more than 200 volunteers to read to, tutor and mentor young people in the area.
Clay Osborn, United Way campaign chairman for Shaw Industries, talked about how that company organized a service week in 2012 to aid the United Way and its member agencies. More than 400 Shaw employees donated some 1,173 hours during that week to complete 17 projects for various local agencies.
Sanders said people are so willing to give because they know the work done by the United Way and the agencies it supports is important.
“The key to sales is to have a good product. We have the absolute best product here with the United Way and the agencies its serves,” Sanders said.
Just one of those agencies, the Salvation Army, served more than 37,000 people last year, while the Family Support Council, another United Way agency, served almost 18,000 people in 2012.
This year’s annual meeting also featured a variety show with performances by United Way board members as well as people from the agencies it supports such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Gordon, Murray and Whitfield Counties.
