New York Times best-selling novelist Joshilyn Jackson will appear Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Dalton-Whitfield Public Library for the Davison Lecture Series’ An Evening With the Author. A reception in her honor, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Jackson lives in Georgia. She is a wife and mother who became a full-time writer when her debut novel, “Gods in Alabama,” sold at auction in 2005. “Gods in Alabama” won the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance’s 2005 Novel of the Year Award and was a No. 1 BookSense pick.
Jackson won Georgia Author of the Year for her second novel, “Between, Georgia,” which also was a No. 1 BookSense pick. Her third novel, “The Girl Who Stopped Swimming,” has been shortlisted for the Townsend Prize for Fiction. Her latest, “Backseat Saints,” published in June, tells the story of Rose Mae Lolley, a fierce, tiny ball of war wounds. Her life changes dramatically when she meets an airport gypsy who shares her past and knows her future. The gypsy’s dire prediction: Ro’s handsome, violent husband is going to kill her — unless she kills him first ...
Jackson’s teaching experience and theater background have both come in handy. She reads the audio versions of her novels, and her work in this field has been nominated for the Audie Award. Jackson is hard at work on a multi-voiced tale of stolen identities called “In Season.”
The Davison Lecture Series, named for Dalton resident Bob Davison, is designed to bring authors and lecturers to Dalton for the enjoyment and enlightenment of area citizens. In the next four months, speakers will discuss diverse topics and genres such as mystery, Southern life and culture, suspense, history, horror, fiction and Native-American life and lore.
The programs are designed primarily for adults and young adults. Some of the talks are traditional with authors reading from their works. Other programs may delve more deeply into character creation, plot selection, motivation for writing or into the speaker’s particular genre.
Many of the authors will have a book signing following their presentation. All programs begin at 6:30 p.m. with a complimentary reception in the author’s honor, courtesy of the Friends of the Dalton-Whitfield Public Library.
The library is at the corner of Waugh and Cappes streets in Dalton. Admission to the Author Series events is free; donations are gratefully accepted.
