The Whitfield County Board of Education is expected to hire a new superintendent today during a special called meeting, less than 10 days after the current superintendent announced his retirement effective March 31.
The leading candidate is believed to be Judy Gilreath, the system’s current assistant superintendent. A source who asked not to be identified said last week Gilreath is the “first choice” by board members as a long-term replacement for Superintendent Danny Hayes.
School boards do not have to conduct a search, interview candidates or name a finalist or finalists for the superintendent position if they promote a current employee.
The meeting is at 4:30 p.m. at the central office at 1306 S. Thornton Ave. The meeting agenda lists an executive session and personnel change recommendations as action items. The meeting is open to the public. Executive sessions can be legally closed to the public and the media for certain reasons.
Gilreath is a familiar face to the school system. She is a former principal of Pleasant Grove Elementary and was named assistant superintendent for support services in July 2006. Gilreath was chosen by the school board as one of four finalists for the superintendent job in 2010, when the board hired Hayes.
During a school board meeting on March 5, Chairman Louis Fordham said Hayes would retire from the school system at the end of the month, two months before his three-year contract was set to expire on May 31.
Hayes, who did not attend the meeting, told The Daily Citizen “the biggest factor” in retiring early was his wife, Rhonda Hayes, being hired as superintendent of Crisp County Schools. She was previously an assistant superintendent for Dalton Public Schools. She began her new job on Wednesday.
School board members unanimously voted Hayes as superintendent on May 3, 2010. His contract included a $140,000 annual salary and a monthly $600 vehicle stipend. He replaced Katie Brochu, who was superintendent from 2005 to 2010.
