An extensive fire that was doused at an Underwood Street apartment complex early Thursday afternoon re-ignited early Friday morning and was quickly extinguished, said Chief Bruce Satterfield of the Dalton Fire Department.
“The police were watching it all night, so we were sort of expecting that,” he said on Friday of the blaze that first began before noon on Thursday at Underwood Lodge Apartments. “It was pretty insignificant. Anytime you have something that large (catch fire), that’s pretty common. The wind starts blowing and drying it out, but it didn’t cause any more damage.”
A resident at the apartments, who did not live in the main building affected by the fire but was relocated out of a building that was slightly affected, said the commotion after midnight awakened her.
“The lights (of the fire trucks) woke me up,” said Ariel Terry. “There were a lot of other people outside too.”
Satterfield said he thought the units that responded Friday morning around 1 a.m. responded in non-emergency mode.
“They probably didn’t even need 100 gallons of water (to put it out),” he said.
Satterfield added there was “nothing new” as to a cause for the fire that he estimated caused between $200,000 and $300,000 in damages, but investigators might be able to announce something next week.
“Four of the 40 units on the north building, the one closest to Underwood Street, sustained some damage, mostly from water,” he said of the building adjacent to the one heavily damaged by fire. “There were 32 units in the building to the south of that that received vinyl damage (from the heat).”
