Man sentenced to 20 years for assault with van

A Chatsworth man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Friday after a Whitfield County jury found him guilty a day earlier of aggravated assault for ramming someone with his vehicle.

Judge Cindy Morris issued the sentence for Ricky Eugene Patterson, 56, of 130 Patterson St.

Patterson was already a convicted felon for the 2002 shooting death of Bobby Shane Morgan of Murray County. He was on parole for voluntary manslaughter in November 2011 when authorities said he used his van to strike Nathaniel Silvers and pin him against the side of a mobile home after an argument.

District Attorney Bert Poston said Silvers suffered internal bleeding and had to be hospitalized for three days but did fully recover.
