A Spring Place man shot in the chest after shooting at police officers has been released from the hospital, Murray County Sheriff’s Office officials said.
Lee Bell, 69, 247 Charger Drive, Spring Place, was charged Friday by the sheriff’s office with aggravated assault on a police officer. No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
Chief Deputy Ray Sitton said three deputies responded to a call about a domestic disturbance involving Bell’s wife at the residence Friday evening. When they got there, the officers told Bell to come out of the house. He instead said “I’m in here,” and they went into the living room and saw him sitting in a hallway with a gun in his hand, Sitton said.
Sitton said they called repeatedly for him to come out and he told them to “stick your head around the corner and I’ll show you what I’ll do.” Sitton said when Bell finally did come out, he fired at the two officers in his living room, Capt. Edward Springfield and Officer Tom Rhodes, and at least one of them fired back, hitting him in the chest.
Sitton said Bell lost control of his gun after he was shot, but he tried to get it back and was being “combative” and making fists at emergency responders as he was being loaded into the ambulance.
Sitton said he wasn’t sure which officer hit Bell, but both are on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
“I don’t think he had any kind of grudge against us (in the sheriff’s office),” Sitton said. “I don’t know what was wrong with him.”
Bell was in the Murray County Jail Saturday evening.
Sheriff Howard Ensley said officials are “just blessed that no one was hurt any worse than they were.”
He said the last officer-involved shooting he can recall was about a year and a half ago and also involved a domestic dispute.
