17th Annual Civil War Re-enactment at Tunnel Hill this weekend

The Tunnel Hill Historical Foundation kicks off the fall season with the 17th Annual Battle of Tunnel Hill Civil War Re-enactment on Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

The grounds around the historic Clisby Austin House become reflective of life during the Civil War back in the 1860s. The skirmishes that took place in the area are played out on the battleground between the Confederate and Union camps at 2 p.m. each day.

With the ongoing concern of gas prices, organizers are quick to remind those within a 100-mile-radius that the re-enactment is a perfect “tank away” trip.

More than 500 re-enactors will begin moving in this week, with most arriving on Friday.  Sutlers will also set up, selling period clothing, accessories, books and other Civil War paraphernalia.

On Friday, several hundred local school children will be on site for a living history education.  The re-enactors volunteer their time to teach the kids about life as a soldier during the Civil War, and provide snippets of history not found in the textbooks.

“The rifle and cannon demonstrations create a lot of excitement,” say organizers. “Many use the ticket they receive for free admission to return for the Battle over the weekend.”

Area plein air artists with the Art Alliance of Georgia will be joining the crowd as they paint to capture the historical atmosphere of the weekend event. Plein air artists enjoy the light and atmosphere of painting outside on site.

“Capturing the historical significance of this Northwest Georgia area is something close to the hearts of these artists,” says B.J. Wright, Art Alliance member. “It’s their way of preserving heritage for future generations. The paintings are special because they also express the feelings of the individual artists.”

Admission to the re-enactment is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-12 and free for children under 3. Parking is free, but donations are gladly accepted by the Tunnel Hill Historical Foundation to help further the cause of historic preservation in the community. Admission to the Tunnel Hill Heritage Center is free Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
