A Chatsworth man was arrested Monday for hurling a dog out of his moving car for “eating his chicken,” authorities said.
Matthew Ray Bramblett, 32, 1276 Old Federal Road N., was charged by the Murray County Sheriff’s Office with cruelty to animals.
Another motorist called in the incident on Jackson Lake Road just before 10 a.m. and a lookout was posted for a white Ford Ranger pickup truck.
“I observed and stopped the vehicle at Central Pit Stop,” said Deputy Mark Phillips in an incident report. “I asked Mr. Bramblett about the incident (and) he did elaborate that he did throw the dog out the window of his vehicle for eating his chicken.”
Phillips said animal control was called but was unable to locate the dog.
Magistrate Court Judge Bryant Cochran set a $5,000 bond for Bramblett, but he was still in custody as of Tuesday afternoon, a jail spokeswoman said.
Cruelty to animals occurs when a person “causes death or unjustifiable physical pain or suffering to any animal by an act, omission or willful neglect,” according to the Georgia Law Enforcement Handbook. An initial offense is considered a misdemeanor if the violator is convicted.
A second or subsequent offense may be punished by up to 12 months of imprisonment and a fine not to exceed $5,000, or both. The death of the animal on the second offense could result in a fine not to exceed $10,000 and a mandatory imprisonment between three and 12 months.
