Tuition-paying students could get a break

Families willing to pay the $1,167 for their out-of-district child to attend Whitfield County Schools could get a little break this year if a new policy officials are considering goes through.

Assistant Superintendent Judy Gilreath said some tuition-paying families have trouble coming up with payments, which are charged twice a year. She said families can opt into a new payment plan in which they pay $233.40 five times a year rather than $583.50 twice a year as the current policy provides.

“It always ensures that they’re paid in advance,” Gilreath said.

Board of Education members are considering revising the policy, presented at Tuesday’s board meeting, and are scheduled to vote on it next month. Rates will continue to be slightly lower per child for families paying tuition for more than one student.

Some 206 students applied to attend a school out of their zone as of Tuesday, Gilreath said. Of those, 46 were outside the Whitfield County Schools district. Gilreath said officials were able to accommodate requests for 178 students while most of the rest chose to go on a waiting list. Georgia school systems by law allow out-of-district students to enroll as space is available.

Caroline Woodason, who oversees the system’s pre-kindergarten classes, said there are 75 students on waiting lists to get into one of the classes funded by Georgia’s Bright from the Start program. There are 11 classes in nine schools for the county system, and each class serves about 20 students.

School starts Thursday.
