DALTON — The Dalton City Council will vote tonight on a resolution outlining new policies for the care and upkeep of West Hill Cemetery. They will also hold the first reading of an ordinance on the matter.
The resolution details policies on matters such as installation of benches, fences and monuments, as well as the placement of floral arrangements, trees and shrubs. It also calls on the city sexton to enforce the new rules.
At a meeting in February, several residents complained that several grave sites are out of compliance with the current code, which bars fences, sidewalks, benches or other enclosures unless constructed by the city.
At that meeting, City Council member Dick Lowrey said the city would have to move “very carefully” in correcting some of the issues in the cemetery.
“We have created our own problem by not following the ordinance. It’s not an easy thing to remedy, and we want to be real careful and try not to offend,” he said. “But people expect a certain level of decorum and dignity in their cemetery.”
West Hill, which is owned by the city, covers more than 200 acres and contains more than 12,000 graves.
The City Council will meet at 6 p.m. in City Hall.
