CHATSWORTH —
Advocates of serving liquor by the drink in the city of Chatsworth celebrated Tuesday night as the referendum they supported passed with 195 votes in favor and 145 opposed.
“I voted yes, and I’m glad it passed,” said city resident Cheryl Blackwell. “I know it’s controversial, but I think it will bring more revenue into Murray County and that more businesses and restaurants will come. I can see the moral side of it, but I think our town is in bad shape financially.”
The Rev. Roger Vest of Chatsworth First United Methodist Church said he was “disappointed” with the outcome.
“But the people voted their decision, and I’ll get up tomorrow morning and continue to try and make Chatsworth a better place to live,” he said. “I don’t think it’s the cure-all that people think it is, but there’s still a lot of other issues we need to address.”
One voter who asked not to be named because he does business with the city said he believes the “vision plan” put forward by Market Street Strategies had an impact. The Atlanta firm helped county officials develop a list of suggestions to improve the quality of life, including offering liquor by the drink throughout Murray County as one part of the county’s efforts to attract jobs.
“I think the plan impressed some people who were fence-sitters, and they saw that (passage) would help the city,” he said.
