Student cited for taking air gun to school

DALTON — A Pleasant Grove Elementary School student was cited after taking an air gun to school.

According to an incident report from the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office, another student reportedly saw the gun in the girl’s book bag Monday morning and told an assistant principal. It turned out to be a Crosman air gun.

“(The girl) stated her stepfather gave her the gun on (Sunday), and told her she could do whatever she wanted to do with it,” the report by Officer D.W. Meadors states. “(The student) was issued a citation and released to her mother.”

Whitfield County Schools spokesman Eric Beavers declined to respond to questions about the incident, citing student privacy laws. No one at the school answered the phone on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the student handbook for Whitfield County Schools, “Students who possess firearms on campus will be subject to a minimum of a one calendar year suspension and will be referred to law enforcement officials.”

A suspension is subject to a disciplinary hearing.
