Dog with slit throat recovering

Sheriff’s office investigating

A pitbull mix with a slashed throat is recovering after a Gordon County animal rescue organization took the dog into its care.

According to Cathy Roth, development director for Animal Rescue of Northwest Georgia, it appears dog “Braveheart’s” throat was slit some time on July 15. She said his owner dropped him off with Murray County Animal Control to get care. Roth found out about the dog, who is about a year old, from a relative who saw something about him on Facebook.

Murray County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ray Sitton said an investigator is working the case, which includes ruling out the possibility of an accident.

“We’re investigating and trying to determine whether it was something that was intentional or whether it was some type of accident,” Sitton said. “You’ve got to be cold-blooded to do something like that.”

Roth’s organization, through its own money and money from private donors, is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of anyone who slit the dog’s throat. Roth said the animal rescue group paid for the dog’s surgery, which occurred on Wednesday, and Braveheart is expected to recover fine.

“We’re hoping he will even be able to bark again, although that is just a question (time will answer),” she said. “... You see neglect, you see mild abuse cases, a broken leg that you’re pretty sure somebody kicked the dog, something like that, but this is just horrific.”

A woman at Murray County Animal Control said the director was not in the office Monday afternoon, and she didn’t have information about the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (706) 695-4592.
