Local residents will have a chance to see Dalton native Lori Beth Edgeman in the critically acclaimed film “Get Low” without leaving town.
The movie opens at Carmike Cinemas 12 in Dalton across from Walnut Square Mall on Friday, Aug. 27, and will run for one week, perhaps two. There will be four to five showings each day, but exact times have not been determined. For show times, visit www.carmike.com next week.
The movie stars Academy Award winners Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek, Academy Award nominee Bill Murray and Lucas Black. Edgeman, who plays Kathryn in what she called the “role of a lifetime,” is a 1994 Dalton High School graduate who has appeared in several feature films, including “3,” an ESPN movie about NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt.
“Get Low” chronicles the true story of Felix “Bush” Breazeale, who caused a nationwide stir when he threw himself a living funeral party in Roane County, Tenn., in 1938. It has received numerous accolades — a Washington Post reviewer called it “as soothing and pure as the sweetest water from the deepest well,” and Edgeman has described it as “awesome” — and has been shown at the Sundance and Toronto film festivals. It was filmed in Crawfordville, the county seat of Taliaferro County.
Dale Hurst is Columbus-based Carmike Cinemas’ marketing director. He was raised in Dalton and spent more than 30 years working at movie theaters here. Since the closest theater showing of “Get Low” was to be in Kennesaw, high school classmate Patty Gober contacted Hurst about the bringing the movie to Edgeman’s hometown.
“Patty and I went to high school together and I think when she found out who was playing in it, she notified me and said, ‘Dale, what can we do to get this movie in Dalton?’ I just simply asked our booking department and they made it happen,” Hurst said.
In discussions with Carmike’s booking department, Hurst was told that Sony Classics is “pretty selective on where their movies are played.”
“I think the fact that someone who plays in the movie lives there had a big part in bringing the movie to Dalton,” Hurst said.
The movie will also begin showing at the AMC Barrett Commons 24 in Kennesaw on Aug. 27, according to the movie’s website (www.sonyclassics.com/getlow/dates.html). It will soon appear in several other cities in Georgia. The movie is rated PG-13.
