It’s important for dogs to get enough exercise and to be able to socialize with other dogs. But city dogs don’t always get those opportunities, says Chris Stearns, a veterinarian with Dalton Animal Care.
That’s why, he says, the new dog park at the city of Dalton’s Lakeshore Park is so needed.
“It’s a wonderful place for pet owners to exercise their dogs in a nice confined area,” he said. “It just adds to the overall quality of life here in Dalton. I have utilized the city of Chattanooga’s canine park and found that it was a good experience for my dog. I think this will be a win for pets, a win for owners and win for the community.”
The park, which opened about two weeks ago, is between the First National and Shaw fields. A fenced-in area that covers about one acre, the park features plenty of grass for dogs to run on, jumping walls and fire hydrants, as well as benches for owners to sit on. It cost the city between $3,000-$4,000.
Dalton City Council member Denise Wood said she has already had a chance to use the park after a visit from her daughter and son-in-law and their dog Dexter.
“He loves to go to dog parks in Atlanta, so I was so excited when we started the plans for one here in Dalton,” she said. “I took Dexter in for a test run. It wasn’t completely finished yet. But he loved it because there was a lot of shade from the trees and a lot of grass. My kids said the ones in Atlanta are really hot.”
Wood said several people have told her they appreciate the city creating the park. She says that many dog owners are still unaware it’s there, but she says as soon as word gets out she expects there will be plenty of people using it.
The park is open from sunrise to sundown seven days a week.
