Alejandro Vega-Carmona, an Acworth man who was driving on I-75 when authorities said he lost control of his pickup truck, resulting in a wreck that killed two passengers, was indicted by a Whitfield County grand jury on two counts of vehicular homicide in the second degree.
The grand jury also indicted him for weaving over the roadway and driving without a license.
Vega-Carmona, 26, is scheduled for arraignment on Oct. 1, when the charges will be formally presented and he can make an initial plea. He has been on hold for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Whitfield County jail since Saturday, a jail officer said. The officer said Vega-Carmona is from Mexico and is not a legal resident of the United States.
Sgt. John Burnette with the Georgia State Patrol said at the time of the Aug. 4 wreck that Vega-Carmona was driving himself, 19-year-old Victor Osbaldo Benitez of Woodstock and 24-year-old Samuel Gonzalez-Martinez of Acworth from a job site in Missouri. Burnette said it appeared the men had been traveling all night when Vega-Carmona fell asleep while driving south on I-75 one mile south of the Walnut Avenue exit at about 9:30 a.m.
The F-150 hit a guard rail, overturned and ejected Benitez and Gonzalez-Martinez, who were lying in the bed of the truck, Burnette said. Vega-Carmona was also injured and was treated at Hamilton Medical Center and released.
