A former Whitfield County resident and national champion in drag racing died over the weekend following a crash between the boat he was fishing from and another boat.
According to the Cleveland (Tenn.) Daily Banner, Dale Rose, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene on the Hiwassee River on Sunday. The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. near the Highway 58 boat deck. Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency are investigating.
Rose was one of the top competitors on the Slant 6 drag racing circuit for many years and was the 2004 national champion. He was also a competitive shooter and finished seventh in the national bench rest shooting championship two weeks ago.
Rose was born in Ohio, according to his sister-in-law Joan Edwards, but he grew up and lived most of his life in Whitfield County. Rose had been living for the past six years in Georgetown, Tenn., where he was a member of Brittsville Baptist Church. Before that he had lived for about four years in Sugar Valley.
“One of the things he was most proud of was being a veteran. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War, and he was very proud of that. He loved his country,” Edwards said.
A professional recreational vehicle dealer, Rose retired two years ago.
“Dale loved his life. He never met a stranger. He was always laughing, and he always had a big smile on his face,” Edwards said.
Rose built and showed hot rods and was an avid outdoorsman.
“He loved to fish. He loved to golf, anything that would get him outside,” Edwards said.
Rose and his wife, Myra, a Dalton native, were married for 32 years. They had two children, Amanda, of Clearwater, Fla., and Grant, of Hot Springs, Ark.
Love Funeral Home is handling the arrangements for Rose’s funeral.
