Dalton residents recycled 1,252 tons of paper and cardboard, plastics, glass and aluminum in 2012.
That “saved approximately 2,087 cubic yards of landfill space,” said Liz Swafford, recycling and education program coordinator for the Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority.
Swafford and authority executive director Norman Barashick recognized the city’s efforts Monday’s Dalton City Council meeting.
Swafford says the 1,252 tons collected by city public works crews “saved enough energy to power 80 households for a year.”
The recycling amount collected in the city dropped 1 percent from 2011 but it was still up 15 percent from 2010.
Dalton City Council member Denise Wood said the decline from 2011 wasn’t a cause for major concern.
“It was very slight, and we are still well above were we were just a couple of years ago,” she said.
Wood said people who have moved into Dalton in recent years may not be aware the city offers curbside recycling.
“In the past, public works has put stickers on garbage cans when they pick them up, letting people know about curbside recycling and telling them what they need to do to get a recycling bin. It might be time to do that again,” she said.
