Monte Gale Salyer, the ex-Dalton State College professor charged with molesting at least three underage victims, is now scheduled to go on trial in Whitfield County on March 11 after several months of delays.
Salyer faces two counts of rape, one count of statutory rape, three counts of child molestation, five counts of aggravated child molestation and one count of criminal attempt to commit a felony. He is accused of molesting an 8-year-old relative and two other children he befriended at church over a period of several years.
Salyer’s case has been scheduled to be tried or otherwise adjudicated several times. In December, Salyer was expected to reach a plea deal in the case, and several of the alleged victims’ family members traveled from out of town to be in court. Salyer declined the plea at the last minute and instead asked for a trial.
In January, the attorney representing him withdrew, citing ethics rules that prohibit lawyers from knowingly presenting false information. Another attorney who agreed to represent him said he wasn’t yet prepared to try the case.
Salyer is now scheduled for a calendar call on March 7 at which time he is expected to announce he is ready for the trial to begin on March 11.
