A Canadian citizen will spend time in a Georgia prison after being sentenced in a “traveler” child sex case in Whitfield County Superior Court on Wednesday.
Lenwyn Ramkellawan, 51, of 503 Woodbrook Lane in Canton, was sentenced by Judge William Boyett to five years in prison followed by 15 years on probation after being found guilty by a jury in April of criminal attempt to commit aggravated child molestation and criminal attempt to commit child molestation. The sentence also includes a fine and other sex offender conditions.
“Ramkellawan was convicted ... based on evidence that he had communicated by telephone and email with an undercover officer he believed to be the stepfather of a 14-year-old girl,” said District Attorney Bert Poston. “(He) had traveled to a Dalton motel for the purpose of engaging in sexual intercourse and other sex acts with the stepdaughter.”
During the trial, the defense called two witnesses — an expert in Internet psychology who testified about role playing and other behaviors on the Internet, and a computer forensic expert who testified that the laptop computer seized at the time of Ramkellawan’s arrest did not contain any child pornography, Poston said.
Ramkellawan was represented by attorneys Donald Samual and Amanda Clark-Palmer of Atlanta, and by Dalton attorney Sam Little. Little did not immediately return a phone call on Wednesday.
Ramkellawan’s wife and daughters as well as other supporters testified on his behalf at sentencing, Poston said. He said Ramkellawan is a Canadian citizen and may be subject to deportation after his prison sentence is completed.
The case was investigated by members of the Northwest Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Poston and Assistant District Attorney Mark Higgins presented the case to the jury. Detective David Scroggins of the Rossville Police Department and Detective Tim Deal and Lt. Chris Lyons of the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation and testified for the state. Officers from the Dalton Police Department and Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office who are also members of the task force participated in the arrest, Poston said.
