Reaching people who don’t necessarily attend church but would still like to get social support with family issues is one of the goals when marriage and family life adviser Gary Chapman comes to Dalton on Tuesday, May 29.
The evening with Chapman will be from 7 to 9 at the trade center.
Chapman’s appearance is part of a “Date Night Dalton 2012” event hosted by Family Frameworks, a regional organization dedicated to helping couples build healthy relationships that lead to successful marriages. Organizer Kathy Schleier said local churches are still playing a part — they’re joined together to help promote the Chapman event and offer their facilities for post-event follow-up.
“There are 20 churches that have come together to partner with us, and what is going to happen that evening is Gary Chapman is going to encourage people to go back to these churches — people who won’t necessarily go for religious (services) — and learn in classes like financial peace, marriage and doing ‘The Five Love Languages’ (the title of a book by Chapman) as a study,” Schleier said. “So we’re trying to encourage people to get the social support they need.”
Tickets can be purchased at the Family Frameworks website at www.marriageisforever.org or by calling (706) 313-0023. Church groups with 24 or more can receive a special rate. There is more information at datenightevents.com.
Schleier reports around 600 tickets have been sold, and she believes the number will climb to between 1,500 and 2,000 by the end of next week.
“We want to help many generations, not just this one,” she added. “Our whole goal is that children will have their own two parents raising them in their home ... (Chapman) really wants to do something like this and we’re kind of an experiment because we’re rural. We’re going to partner with him so couples can have a different kind of date night. It’s not going to be your typical Gary Chapman event. It’s not an all-day event — just an evening — and it should be a lot of fun.”
Sales of “The Five Long Languages” exceeding five million copies earned Chapman the Platinum Book Award from the Evangelical Publishers Association. The book has been translated into more than 35 languages. Twenty-seven other books and five video series are among his works, according to the website www.garychapman.org.
