A Dalton man who officials said locked himself in a bedroom and kept officers in an hours-long standoff Friday morning is in the Whitfield County Jail without bond.
Derrick Lamar Chastain, 25, of 214 Robbie Drive, is charged with parole violation and other charges are pending, Sheriff Scott Chitwood said in a statement.
Chitwood said the state parole office called the 911 center at 8:26 a.m. Friday requesting help at 210 Robbie Drive.
“They had gone to this residence to arrest a parolee for violating terms of his parole,” Chitwood said. He said when they got inside, they found Chastain had “barricaded himself in a bedroom and had a firearm in his possession.”
The sheriff’s office and the Georgia State Patrol’s SWAT team were called in to assist, and a sheriff’s office negotiator got Chastain on the phone to try to talk him into coming out.
“The negotiator and the suspect spoke on the telephone several times over the next few hours with the suspect refusing to surrender,” Chitwood said. “... At 12:15 p.m., the sheriff’s negotiator was able to get the suspect to come out of the residence without any weapons and surrender. The suspect was then taken into custody. Officers recovered two rifles from inside the residence.”
Georgia State Patrol Cpl. David Phillips said several troopers from the Dalton post responded in addition to the SWAT members, who came from different parts of the state.
