After 34 years as a pediatrician at Pediatrics of Dalton, Dr. Luis M. Viamonte will retire at the end of this month.
Viamonte came to the United States from Cuba at the age of 17 as an unaccompanied minor via the Peter Pan Operation of the early 1960s. This agreement between Fidel Castro and the United States allowed for the exile of many youngsters.
He did his pre-medical education at the University of Miami and finished at Auburn University when his parents were allowed out of Cuba. This summer marks the 40th anniversary of his graduation from Emory University School of Medicine.
Viamonte has served as president of the medical staff and as a trustee of both the Hamilton Medical Center board and the Hamilton Health Care System board.
“I expect to continue my practice of medicine vicariously through our son, Dr. Louis D. Viamonte, the fourth generation Viamonte physician,” he said. “I also will have the will to keep up with medical advances so that I will know what to do for my two granddaughters from our daughter Elizabeth V. Moore.
“I have been blessed by many faithful patients of more than one generation and by loyal colleagues and co-workers that have made my practice possible. I will miss them.”
