Travel club plans trips to French Riviera, New England

Previews of the upcoming trips “Discovering the French Riviera” and “Colors of New England” await those who attend the Great Escapes information session on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 5:30 p.m. at The James E. Brown Center, Room 101, on the campus of Dalton State College.

Participants will learn plans of two upcoming fall trips: a September trip for “Discovering the French Riviera” and an October trip for “The Colors of New England.”

“These two trips are equally exhilarating and something we feel our local travelers will truly enjoy,” said Carol Burton, Great Escapes coordinator.

The nine-day French Riviera trip scheduled for Sept. 13–21 will begin with a tour of Nice and St. Jean-Cap-Ferrat, called the crown jewel of the French Riviera featuring a visit to the Rothschild Villa and Gardens, a seaside palazzo overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Travelers will walk through a local flower market in Nice and take in all the wonderful fragrances of the French Riviera.

A local guide will lead travelers on a tour of Monaco where you will be introduced to the famous Casino of Monte Carlo, the Place des Armes, Prince’s Palace, Avenue des Beaux Arts and the Cathedral of Monaco, where Prince Rainier and Princess Grace are buried. The visit to Monaco will also include a visit to the fascinating Oceanographic Museum which was founded in 1910. Delve into history as you travel to the town of Frejus, once the site of a major naval port established by Julius Ceasar in 49 B.C. and see the remains of the Roman theaer and amphitheater. You will also have the option to select a three night Paris post tour extension.

The second trip is “Colors of New England” scheduled for Oct. 1–8. It has been described as “the perfect trip at the perfect time of the year,” by Jim Eldridge, a tour guide with more than 20 years of experience and a resident of Maine. The New England tour begins in Cambridge, Mass. with a two-night stay along the Charles River. The following day will be a sightseeing tour featuring the Old South Meeting House, Public Gardens, Old North Church, Beacon Hill and the U.S.S. Constitution. No trip to Boston would be complete without a stop at the famed Faneuil Hall marketplace and a welcome dinner at the Union Oyster House, located on the historic Freedom Trail.

Welcome the morning as the group sets out for Vermont, the “Green Mountain State.” Traditional white steeple churches, quaint villages and tree-covered mountainsides dot the charming landscape of the journey. In Woodstock, a covered bridge in the town center along with beautifully restored Georgian houses surround the town green. A visit to the impressive 165 foot-deep, mile-long Quechee Gorge will be a stop before continuing our trip to Stowe, Vermont. Watch apples transform into cider the old fashioned way. A tour of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream factory should be just the right touch to enjoy some of the best ice cream in the world.

The next day, the tour heads for New Hampshire as the journey continues through the magnificent White Mountains to North Conway. Learn of the importance of the maple sugaring to the region. A visit to Lake Winnipesaukee in North Conway will be complete with a short lake cruise. Next will be a departure for Maine, arriving in beautiful Boothbay Harbor, “the boating capital of New England.” Enjoy a relaxing cruise through Boothbay Harbor for spectacular views of the coast, including lighthouses, summer homes and maybe spot some harbor seals along the way. A very special farewell lobster dinner with all the trimmings are planned for the participants on their last day in Maine.

On the final day of the trip, will travel from Boothbay Harbor to Kennebunkport and back to Boston as the tour ends. The changing of the seasons should be at their peak and is expected to be one of the most spectacular sights as can only be enjoyed in the great states of New England.
