A Dalton resident with a rare genetic disorder is raising money this Saturday for a national organization dedicated to research and assisting patients.
Aaron Coulter said he’s working on his first fundraiser for Help Stop NF2 through a silent art auction open to the public this Saturday at the Creative Arts Guild from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. Artwork, raffle items and other items donated by local artists and businesses will be for sale.
Neurofibromatosis 2 is a genetic disorder that causes non-cancerous tumors to form in various places throughout the body. Sometimes the tumors are harmless, but when they press tightly against nerves and cause pain, or if they form in areas that could cause brain damage, they have to come out or at least be shrunk.
Many NF2 patients suffer from facial or other paralysis related to nerve damage or treatment. Coulter has had more than 10 surgeries since he was diagnosed at 14 years old — he graduated from Dalton High School in 2006 — and experiences many ups and downs. For a while, he was unable to smile until surgery corrected his facial paralysis.
Coulter founded The Smile Project recently, an NF2 organization adopted by Help Stop NF2 with a mission to “help provide well-needed support so that those affected may regain their stolen facial expressions, most especially, their smile,” Coulter said.
