Georgia Northwestern Technical College is growing and Dalton State College is getting $4.6 million as a result.
Georgia Northwestern will take ownership of the Dalton State East building on the Northwest Georgia College and Career Academy campus off Maddox Chapel Road in December, said officials.
“The transfer was determined at the state level by the (Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia),” said John Schwenn, president of DSC. “Transferring the building will give us additional funding that will help us put (the School of Health Professions) under one roof.”
The School of Health Professions offers a bachelor’s degree in nursing and several associate degrees, according to the DSC website. Schwenn said health classes that are scattered on campus will move into the renovated School of Technology building.
“The building was originally used for automotive and welding programs,” said Schwenn. “It left a lot of big, open industrial spaces that we can change into classrooms.”
Schwenn said renovations will happen in 2013 after the building transfer has been completed in December. The $4.6 million figure is based on the initial construction and furnishing costs of the technology building in 1979.
“It’s a win-win-win situation,” said Schwenn. “Georgia Northwestern and Dalton State will continue to develop into the institutions that we need to be, but it is also a win for the community as it will offer more opportunity for education.”
The Board of Regents is changing ownership of the Dalton State East building because DSC is no longer a technical school, said Schwenn. DSC dropped its technical college status in July 2011.
“In the past, DSC ran a technical system alongside our university system,” said Pam Partain, director of marketing and communications. “We have since given up our technical affiliation after Georgia Northwestern established itself (in 2009) to serve the technical college needs in our community.”
DSC applied to the Board of Regents for the $4.6 million renovation earlier this year separate of the deal with Georgia Northwestern, but the project was denied then.
Craig McDaniel, president of Georgia Northwestern, did not immediately return phone calls or emails left for him on Thursday.
