Whitfield Education Foundation awards $26,000 to innovative teachers

After a survey of Tunnel Hill Elementary students showed they crave more art at school, teacher Jammie Brown worked with the Whitfield Education Foundation to bring a pop artist from New York to work with classes later this year.

“The lack of art in the regular day can be attributed to the pressure of time felt by the elementary teacher,” Brown said in her grant application. “I was inspired when I first saw a piece of (artist) Michael Albert’s work that showcased the numbers of pi. It led me to look at other pieces which also could be tied to curriculum.”

Albert will work with all of the students and teachers at Tunnel Hill Elementary and has offered to work with students at other schools while he is here. “Curriculum Through an Artist’s Eyes” is one of 26 innovative ideas that will be funded by the Whitfield Education Foundation.

Chris Blevins, president of the foundation’s board of trustees, handed out 26 checks in different amounts to teachers from 12 elementary schools, three middle schools and three high schools. Executive Director Mary Ellen Kinsey said the funding goes toward designing lessons that inspire students as well as educating them.

The foundation exceeded its annual $25,000 goal to award $26,000 in grants on Monday to help teachers design innovative lessons that spark in their students a desire to learn.

The Whitfield Education Foundation is known in the community for the annual Showcase of the Stars in November and the golf tournament in April. School staff look forward to Jeans Days, when their donation provides an opportunity to wear jeans to school with their students.
