A budget that banks on a five-mill property tax increase is up for a vote Wednesday during a called Whitfield Board of Education meeting.
The meeting begins at 7:30 a.m. at the school system’s central office at 1306 S. Thornton Ave. and is open to the public.
Officials won’t officially adopt the property tax rate until later this summer or fall after more information about the local tax digest is in. However, the budget that board members are considering is based on numbers that include a tax increase of from $14.76 per $1,000 of assessed property value to $19.76 on the same amount (a five-mill increase).
The proposed budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 is $94.05 million in revenue and $97.7 million in expenditures. The budget for the current fiscal year is $89.1 million in revenue and $94.1 million in expenditures.
Officials said the school system faces a $6 million to $7 million shortfall from a combination of a shrinking local tax base, the unexpected end of a revenue stream from local inventory taxes that Whitfield County Board of Commissioners members approved, as well as several million dollars in increased costs for health insurance, state-mandated salary increases for some teachers and other factors.
The local tax increase would close all but $3.6 million of that, which officials propose filling with money from the fund balance.
Wednesday’s meeting will also include votes or discussion on a few other items, including class sizes, school meals and attendance procedures.
