The annual Liberty Tree Festival commemorates Dalton as the home of Georgia’s Liberty Tree.
This year’s festival, the third, takes place Oct. 23-24 in downtown Dalton. Highlights include “The Spirit of Liberty Bell” (a full-size replica of the original Liberty Bell), a special salute to America’s military heroes, a Kansas City Barbecue Society competition, arts and crafts, live music and more.
Peter Lillback of the Providence Forum will speak about the history of liberty trees at the First Baptist Church of Dalton on Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and Dalton State College on Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. Lillback is president of Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, Pa., serving also as professor of historical theology. He is also president of the Providence Forum, an author of seven books and countless articles, and is a frequent guest on “The Glenn Beck Show.”
Festivities include field trips by local students as well as Saturday’s outdoor celebration on King Street featuring an arts and crafts show, the barbecue competition, kids fun zone, downtown merchant specials and fireworks finale.
Georgia’s Liberty Tree is a descendant of America’s last original colonial-era Liberty Tree, a symbolic gathering place of the Sons of Liberty during the American Revolution. In 2006, 14 descendant saplings were planted, with one going to each of the original 13 colonies and one to Mount Vernon. Dalton was selected to be the home of Georgia’s Liberty Tree.
