Pivotal events of the year 1863 will be scrutinized and analyzed in the 2013 Civil War in the Western Theater Colloquium to be held Saturday, Feb. 2, at the trade center.
The theme of this year’s colloquium is “1863: Year of Decision.” It will feature lectures by two prominent Civil War historians, said John Fowler, director of the Bandy Heritage Center, which is sponsoring the program.
Jim Ogden, staff historian with the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, will speak on “Gateway to the Deep South: The Battles Around Atlanta” at 1 p.m. His lecture will be followed at 2 p.m. by Richard McMurry, historian and author, who will speak on “‘Ole Joe 1863: Joseph E. Johnston and the Defense of the West.”
Both programs will be in the trade center’s lecture hall; they are free and open to the public.
The colloquium will coincide with the Chickamauga Civil War Trade Show and Sale and is supported by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and through appropriations from the state General Assembly.
Those wishing to know more may contact the Bandy Center at (706) 272-4452.
